Direct Dyes
Direct dyes are a type of dye that can directly dye cellulose fibers in a neutral or weakly alkaline medium. Usually, no mordant is needed. Just add salt or sodium sulfate to the dye bath and boil it to dye. It is usually formed by hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces between cellulose and dyes, so it has poor washing and light fastness. Light fastness above level 5 is called direct light-fast dye.
Direct dyes have a complete color spectrum from yellow to black, simple production process, low price, and easy use. Therefore, they are widely used in knitting, silk, cotton spinning, thread and tape, leather, wool and linen, papermaking and other industries, and are also used for dyeing viscose fibers.
